Traditional Publishing
In the world of traditional publishing, Authors are considered providers of ideas and words. Once a publisher believes that a manuscript has the potential for profit, the content provided by the Author is transformed in a book through the processes of typing, spelling, textual revisions, layout, cover creation, and printing. This process will take approximately 12 months, and at this point, the publisher starts the distribution and marketing of the book while the Author carries the roll of a bystander.
Usually the Author signs a contract granting the publisher exclusively all rights and, in exchange, gets paid for his ideas approximately 8 to 10% royalties once or twice a year.
Upon termination of the contract — in general when books go out of print — even if the Author holds the copyright of the book, he/she only have the rights to reuse the original manuscript. All additions and changes made by the publisher, in other words, the book itself, belongs to the publisher!
Self-Publishing
A new, economical and very exciting way of getting published… not really!
In this model the Author is induced to believe that with some determination and a little bit of effort he/she will be able to self-publish and become a famous bestseller. Basically, the Author hires a “printing and binding company” that assembles and prints a self-produced book. All publication and production costs are paid by the Author — that’s why the word self is used — directly or indirectly, through the Author’s advanced obligation to buy hundreds or thousands of copies.
In this case, the copyright belongs to the Author, and he/she is solely responsible for the storage, marketing, distribution, selling, etc. of the book.
Unless an Author is targeting a very specific audience — his/her students, co-workers, and/or family — self-publishing is not a solution. It is a headache!
The fact is unless the Author is an expert in all publishing areas and have great marketing channels, taking all matters in his/her own hands should be only the last resort.
